Obituary

Edward James Phillips
January 30th, 1946 – September 19th, 2023
Los Angeles, CA – Reno, NV

Edward James Phillips, a beloved husband, father, and grandfather, passed away on September 19th, 2023, at the age of 77.

Ed was born in Los Angeles, California, on January 30th, 1946, to Clarence and Catherine Phillips. He was one of six siblings: Kay Floto, Coleen Pacino, Geraldine McInerney, Kathy Winters, and Mary Jo Raj. Ed graduated from St. John Bosco Technical School in 1964 before proudly serving in the US Navy aboard the USS Enterprise from 1964 to 1969.

In July 1967, Ed married the love of his life, Martina (Penny) Pontillo, and their enduring love story spanned 56 remarkable years. He fondly referred to her as his "child bride."

After his honorable discharge from the Navy, Ed dedicated his life to the real estate industry. He obtained his first real estate license in May 1974 and established himself as a respected professional in the field.

Ed's contributions extended beyond his professional life. He served as the Honorary Mayor of Valley Center and was named Valley Center Citizen of the Year. Ed was an active member of various community organizations, including but not limited to Kiwanis and the Knights of Columbus. He also held the position of President of the Association of San Diego Realtors for multiple terms.

Upon relocating to Reno, Nevada, Ed continued his community involvement as a proud member of the Fernley Chamber of Commerce and served on several Northern Nevada real estate boards.

In his free time, Ed wholeheartedly enjoyed anything to do with classic cars. Since 1986, Ed has participated in Hot August Nights every year, and was a passionate member of numerous classic car clubs. His cherished ‘65 Chevy Impala was a testament to his love for all things automotive. Ed also cherished family moments while trout fishing in Mammoth and passionately supported sports teams, particularly the Chargers, Dodgers, and Padres.

Ed will be remembered for his selflessness, willingness to lend a helping hand, and a sense of humor that could light up any room. His kindness, compassion, and generosity touched the lives of countless family members and friends.

Ed is survived by his loving wife, Martina (Penny) Phillips, and their four children: Corrine, Edward, Katie, and Carrie. He also leaves behind nine grandchildren: Daryl, Edward, Martina, Stephen, Kyle, Vincent, Michael, Ryan, Victoria, and five great-grandchildren: Jayden Walker, Keagan, Juniper, Jaxon, and Kellan.

A memorial service to celebrate Ed's life will be open to all who had the pleasure of crossing paths with him. It will take place on September 30, 2023, at Mountain View Mortuary, located at 425 Stoker Ave. Reno, NV. The service will begin at 2 pm, followed by a reception with light refreshment. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations to the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, the Cold Springs Family Center, or directly to the Phillips family.

The Phillips family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude for the outpouring of support and condolences received during this immensely difficult time. Ed's legacy of love, service, and laughter will continue to inspire us all.
